Special Educational Needs

A child has SEN if he or she has a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them special educational provision is support which is additional or different to the support usually available to children of the same age’

At Longtower P.S. we are an inclusive school and we aim to support all children and their individual needs. Need falls into the following categories:

  • Communication and interaction;
  • Cognition and learning;
  • Social, emotional and behavioural;
  • Sensory and/or physical needs.

Who is responsible for children with SEN?

Class teachers are responsible for the day to day support for all children in their class. Each class teacher assesses the children continually as part of their teaching. If a teacher feels that a child is not making expected progress they will focus targeted interventions in class. If more or different support is needed, then an IEP will be put in place to support the child to help them make progress.   These targets will be discussed with the class teacher, parent and child.

Our Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) is Mrs McCrystal.

The SENCo will monitor progress and will seek advice from other professionals to make a more detailed assessment.

All staff have had extensive in-service training to help them manage a range of special educational needs.
