Long Tower PS Centenary Celebrations

In May 2014, Long Tower Primary School commemorated the centenary of the Boys’ school which formally opened in May 1914.  We had a great celebration and we were overwhelmed by the huge turnout and interest shown in our school.  Many stories were exchanged, fond memories relived and many old friendships rekindled.

We published a booklet in response to the many requests we have had for copies of photographs, both old and more recent. Since we celebrated our centenary in May, we have had visitors from as far afield as Australia and America and to enjoy viewing the memorabilia that we have gathered over the years.

Both St Columba’s Boys’ and its successor, the present Long Tower PS, have touched lives and influenced people throughout the world over the decades. There exists a keen interest in the school and a strong sense of pride and camaraderie among those who have been educated here.

The school continues to thrive and excel. As recently as January 2014, the school was inspected by ETI.  We received the top grade of ‘Outstanding’ in all areas inspected: these include achievements and standards; provision for learning; leadership and management and the quality of provision in the Nursery Unit. Thus was endorsed the school's longstanding reputation as a supportive environment in which nurturing and learning go hand in hand.

I would like to pay tribute to our hardworking staff, enthusiastic children, supportive parents and dedicated governors and priests.

Thank you to our organising committee, who worked tirelessly to ensure our Centenary celebrations were the best that they could be.
